This is the last blog entry from me. I will miss everyone and i will keep in touch. In p4k 2006 I am proud of all the accomplishments that we made in this class I am glad that everyone learned something new and different and had a chance to experience new and different things.I am thankful of all the achievements and chances that I have had. All I would like to say is THANK YOU to all the trainers for giving me the chance for these experiences. THANK YOU!

Are cheat codes cheating?

In yesterday's program, we talked about the possibility of adding cheat codes into the game. A cheat code is something you can do as a player to immediately advance - such as raising your level, or ability, or changing your location.

Many students liked the idea of having some cheat codes. DeWayne disagreed, saying a game with cheat codes is not a game. It is cheating.

Many of the GK Leaders, playing the Alpha, were frustrated by getting deep into debt. The idea was raised to have a cheat code to get oneself out of debt.

DeWayne responded, "The question is, in Haiti can you use a cheat code to get out of poverty?"

That settled that.

Today's P4K: Child Alert Haiti and Character Design

In today's program, we used games to familiarize ourselves with the new UNICEF report,Child Alert: Haiti, which only came out last week. We also discussed why UNICEF chose this approach to educate people about issues in Haiti and how that was similar and different from our approach, using P4K.

We then explored Character Development, looking at sketches of our game's five family members, created by gameLab, and developed backstories for the different members.

Speaking with Microsoft and Reviewing the Content Critique

On Tuesday, March 28th, all were disappointed when a planned trip to the Microsoft offices in NYC was unexpectedly cancelled that very morning. However, we were able to have a nice conference call amongst all of the players.

Instead, we spent time during the program reviewing the content critique developed by Kiran, our content expert at Columbia's Teachers College, and did a scavenger hunt within the prototype looking for the errors or places of improvement.

For example, we learned that girls are unlikely to work as a mechanic, men are unlikely to work in the market (unless assisting a woman), and children are paid less than adults when working in a rum factory. However, none of this is yet reflected in the prototype. We learned about how the role of health care and education in the game could be improved, specific touches that would make it reflect Haitian culture more, and how gameLab will incorporate these specifics of Haitian culture into the next game build.

Hi everyone! This is Kris of couse.I just wanted to tell you about my experience at the 2006 Serious Games Coference, here in San Jose. Well, so far, Afi and I went to summit sessions where Peter from gameLab joined us. At these sessions we learned about "Politics,Religion,and Ideology: New appoaches to biased games" by Ian Bogost. This session was about the limits on commercial game development techniques. Then we went to another session on "serious play: at the edge of education gaming".This session was on exactly what we're doing with educational game development, the process, the glitches, the hard work and the final outcome. And the last session we did was on "Real Teachers:Real Games". This focused on teachers who use games to teach classes in history and other subjects. Today is a whole new day of experiences on gaming and I can't wait to tell everyone all about it. See u when I get back. LATER!!!!!!!!!

P4K Prepares for the Global Kids Conference

Next week is the annual Global Kids Conference, in which 600 teens come together, led by Global Kids Leaders, around a global topic. This year the topic is Media in a Globalized Age. Four GK Leaders in P4K are running workshops in the conference, so in P4K today they practiced faciliating the workshop. The workshop is an introduction to media: what it is, its global history, and the pros and cons.

Incidentally, I noticed something different in the room today. In past meetings, GK Leaders often take photos from web and turn them into their desktop images or screensavers. It only takes one click. In the past, these images have been popular characters from animated tv shows and anime, nothing to do with our program. Today, however, the photos were of Haiti, which I recognized from the work last week.

The following is from the Gameplay section of the prototype document:

The player controls a small family of four people: a father, mother, brother, and sister. Each member has a set of attiributes (illness, energy, education) and the family as a whole has a money attribute. The goal of the game is to get the family as much education as possible. The game takes place over four years, divided into sixteen seasons.

The game is something of a mix between the RPG Cute Knight and the educational game Oregon Trail. Players are attempting to guide their family through the hard world of extreme poverty. The family risks illness and depravation as they try to improve their lot.

The game's main space is a menu screen. The menu screen show the status of the player's characters and a set of options. Players begin the game on this menu screen by assigning each of the characters to an activity. Activities include working, going to school, staying in the hospital, or remaining unassigned (staying at home).

The menu screen also contains a store. In the store, players can use the family's money to buy them items that increase their health and energy, improve their earnings, or open up new opportunities. Players can also use the house option to set the amount of money spent on basic cost of living expenses.

Once all the family members have been assigned to some activity and the shopping is finished, players submit their decisions and a season passes. Based on the roles they were assigned and the conditions of the family's home, they can gain or lose illness, energy, education and money.
There is also a chance that a random event may take place, depending on the status of an individual character. These events appear as a pop-up windows. Sometimes these pop-up windows announce events and are clicked-through; others contain choices that the players must make.

When all of the events are finished, the player returns to the menu screen. All family members' attributes have been adjusted by the accumulation of all of the effects (current status effects + home effect + any random event) and display in the family display. Any unassigned family members need to be assigned to new activities, and players have the option of going to the store to purchase new items. The player then submits, watches the progress of the season, and so on until the final season is over.

Today's Program - Prototype Day!

We did three things in the program today.

First, using the information about Haiti we provided to gameLab, which we received from our educational consultant Kiran, we did a role play in which GK Leaders played different roles based on real people's lives in Haiti, such as a Market Worker, Nurse, or Child. Each GK Leaders knew something about themself but had to answer questions that only other people knew, like a Musician, Economist, or Father.

Second, Jonah from gameLab showed us the first prototype of the game and the various documents created to support it. Then we played the game and talked about what was fun about it and the type of lessons it might teach. Considering this was only a rough prototype, I was surprised and delighted with the almost overwhelmingly positive reaction it received.

Finally, GK Leaders were asked to post in our blog something they learned about Haiti today, what they thought about the prototype, or both.

Now here are my words for I speak the truth. Haiti needs our help for the government isn't stable. The rebels successfully ran President Aristide out of office and left haiti to be a country without democracy. I don't know if it was such a smart idea on their part, but what I have learned about the president isn't that good as well for it seems that he was hungery for power. His been elected in 1990 without many Haitians able to vote is unfair. A voice makes a difference no matter how small it is. All it takes is one to change the world.

Many Haitian couldn't vote. 7,000 troops was sent for a stable mission. I learn they kidnap people and left them in the room. Haiti almost collapsed.

It is very importance that you know what is going on in other countaries, about their lifestyle. They would like to get 58cent an hour so they could have the money to buy their kids books, bags, and uniforms so their kids could get a good education. Haiti is a poor country. It is a very rough life for the people who are living in Haiti. They could not vote fear for their life.

The life in haiti is a rough one for the people. They could not vote and it also a poor country.
People's lives have been destroyed. They have no where to go. All these problem because of politics. What democracy can do is make haiti a better place for the people to live their lives and stop the violence. Also it can give the people the right to be free from the suffering. What I learned from this is that the people of haiti have had to do what the higher classes have told them to do.

This is my words, my philosophy. Today we watched two videos about Haiti. The first, Mickey Mouse Goes to Haiti, is about the use by American corporations like Disney of Haitian sweatshops. The second movie, Haiti - Democracy Undone, is a very recent documentary by Discovery Channel/New York Times about the role of the U.S. government first supporting then undermining Haitian democracy.

My experiences in Global Kids Playing 4 Keeps is the best ever. It has challenged me and because of it I'm better in school and my everday life. For example I had to do something for the program and i was nervous and I do mean NERVOUS.The other kids say that i was nervous and because the didn't laugh at me I did what was expected of me.That experience raised my confidence and i just would like to thank global kids fro that. In today's program we played Tradewinds and compared it with Cute Knight, which we played last week. In the first, you are a merchant fighting pirates and making a profit. In the second you are a cool who want to become a knight. We compared the two, discussed core mechanics, and discussed how both games are about resource management, played over rounds. After discussing how this will also be the core mechanic of the P4K game, we looked at other teen blogs and then worked on our own.
